THE FIRST STEPThink of step one of the Metabolism Miracle as an eight- week spring clean. It's a low- carb 'rehab' period that's specifically designed to reprogramme your body to handle carbohydrates healthily. For the eight weeks of step one, you will need to cut out most carbohydrates from your diet. As a registered dietician, I was never a fan of low- carb diets. I felt that there was something wrong with removing an entire group of nutrients from the daily diet. Carbohydrate is the preferred fuel for the body. So how could eliminating it be healthy? But after years of researching Metabolism B, I have changed my mind. This rehabilitative state accomplishes two things. By eliminating carb- dense foods, you stop contributing too much sugar to your bloodstream, which helps to stop your body releasing too much insulin. The temporary elimination of most carbs will enable the liver to deplete most of the glycogen stores it uses for the self- feeding mechanism. But, as a temporary short- term choice to reset a metabolism to be healthy, it works. Enlarge Has your metabolism gone haywire? KEEPING IT SIMPLEPerhaps the best part about step one of the Metabolism Miracle, besides the fat loss and energy boost it promises, is its ease and simplicity. What could be simpler? Each of the four arrows represents a category of foods. They are: lean proteins, healthy fats, allowed vegetables and carbohydrates. For example, steak and chicken fall into the protein arrow, olive oil and nuts fall into the fat arrow, and potatoes fall into the carbohydrate arrow. Take the two dairy foods cheese and yoghurt. Cheese contains mostly protein, so it fits into the protein arrow. Low- fat yoghurt contains protein and fat, too - however its main nutrient is carbohydrate, so this dairy product is in the carbohydrate arrow. Eat a sensible breakfast, lunch and dinner (see our meal recommendations for ideas) using foods from the approved lists - one main meal every five hours throughout the day - and eat something from the snack list if you are hungry between meals. Drink at least two litres of caffeine- free fluids a day. Avoid gaps of more than five hours without a meal or a snack. Within one hour of waking up and right before bed, be sure to have a meal or snack. Do A minimum of 3. Many people are surprised to learn that milk, fruit, carrots and lentils also fit into the carbohydrate arrow. These are carbohydrates you can eat in step one, but only in strictly limited quantities. You'll need to check the labels on the packaging to see how much carbohydrate they contain. Read on and I will explain how. It's very simple when you know the basic rules. These foods will not stimulate your insulin rollercoaster. You can eat them whenever you wish. CARB CONTROLThe key to step one is carbohydrate control. During any five- hour period of step one, you may eat no more than 5g of carbohydrate in total. This '5x. 5 rule' allows you to eat limited amount of carbs without stimulating insulin release. The list of carbohydrates that you must absolutely avoid during step one all exceed the 5g limit (see the arrow chart). I call these foods '5x. YOU CAN DO ITAlmost every patient with Metabolism B in my practice who sees the 'carbs to avoid' list begins to panic. They grow pale, shake their head and declare: 'There is no way that I can do this for eight weeks!'. Your strong reaction to this list of foods is just one more affirmation that you have Metabolism B. GET SET FOR YOUR THREE- DAY DETOXPrepare yourself: The first three days of the diet will be tough. Although you will be delighted with the changes that your body feels by the fourth day of this diet, the first three days of Step One will be tough. Your body has been using carbohydrates for fuel since the day you were born. Now, you are asking your brain to choose an alternative fuel source for a short time. You must give yourself a few days to acclimatise to this new approach. Rome wasn't built in a day. Even though you will be eating plenty of food for the first three days, you can expect to feel tired, grumpy, hungry, slightly shaky, light- headed and a little headachy. You will probably crave carbohydrates - but be strong and hang in there. You can do it! After three days, I promise you will begin to feel much better, and following the diet will become easier. Why are those first three days so difficult? The problem is that your liver contains a stockpile of blood sugar in the form of glycogen. When you begin Step One and cut out dense carbohydrate from your diet, your liver will automatically 'feed' you with a meal's worth of glycogen from its stores, a process it will repeat about every five hours. That's almost five meals per day. In response to this, your pancreas will release too much insulin and your blood sugar will continue to rollercoaster, even though you will be eating minimal carbohydrates. It's these blood sugar highs and lows that will initially make you feel irritable. After three days, as you continue to eliminate a large amount of carbohydrate from your diet and your liver remains purposely depleted of most of its glycogen stores, your brain will have to come up with an alternative plan for fuelling your body. Should it burn fat or muscle cells for fuel? Now for the good news: if you follow my plan, the choice it will make will be to burn fat cells. Exercise plays an important role in the Metabolism Miracle now as it literally energises and activates muscle. If you exercise for at least 3. RECIPE IDEASBreakfast.
